The Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert has paid tribute to her sister, Elizabeth, who died in a “routine surgery” on Saturday. Chabert, who played Gretchen Wieners in the 2004 comedy, took to Twitter to share her sorrow after her sister passed away from complications caused by a kidney stone. “Though I lost my sister yesterday, I find comfort in knowing she’s in a better place,” the 27-year-old wrote.

Just a few hours earlier, Lacey had taken to Twitter again to share a heartbreaking photo of her sister. “I wish I could still hold her hand,” she captioned the moving image, which showed her embracing her. Just like Lacey, Elizabeth was also very active on social media. Her Twitter bio said she was “Living happily with a boyfriend.” Elizabeth was most recently spotted on her Twitter page on 25 October 2016, when she uploaded a photo of her boyfriend, Joshua Baber.

Both Elizabeth and Lacey were born in Louisiana, the star having changed her name when she joined the movie Gossip Girl as Karen “Chupacabra” Scheinman. Elizabeth worked as a professional model and had also spent time working in Malibu beach-front boutique Blackshift. The actress was described as “beautiful, intelligent and fun” by her sister Lacey on Instagram, who posted her love for her niece and nephew online.
