It’s not that Kim Kardashian, 26, and Kanye West, 33, didn’t try. They simply reached out to lawyers and set up a meeting for their daughter North with lawyers to figure out how much support she needs going forward. As is the case with almost all divorces, there are costs to the divorce; in the case of a child, those costs can be devastating to a family. North’s parents make a lot of money from their joint estate, with the bulk of it going to support his upbringing. Now, with a new agreement in effect, she and Kanye probably make up to $200,000 a month. Not only in child support, but in child support arrears, too, which will make things incredibly precarious for the Kardashian family. The reality star is reportedly asking for $70,000 in back child support.

Not that the couple needs that kind of support; they’re making money from their music, movie deals and even reality TV shows. But it’s certainly a burden — if not an entire liability. It’s also a headache for legal services, given that Kim and her sister Kourtney didn’t have a prenup and would’ve been subject to child support orders if they were married for a shorter period of time. The New York Times notes that, in California, joint legal custody means that a child can’t go to a different parent while both have health insurance or health care; in New York, they can.

A settlement, of course, wouldn’t have made a difference in this particular case. We don’t know if a judge will approve an agreement that provides for joint custody, and the case may well proceed without it. Whatever the details, it would be an interesting situation for the rest of us to see play out in court.

The Times adds one small detail the couple may or may not have had in mind: If the judge approves such an arrangement for joint custody, the agreement would likely mean that North would be able to go to her mother’s house for a good chunk of the summer
