Tear out your lawn, get more free cash. LADWP ups rebates for customers willing to tear up their lawns, says Winton

Alfred Winton is willing to give up his lawn and his backyard to help LADWP fight climate change.
Winton, who lives on a large lot along the east side of Highway 70, is asking LADWP to give him money when it comes time to replace the turf in his yard and in the drainage ditch. He says he currently plants a cover crop of winter oats and clover. And he also says he’s willing to spend his own money to get a new one for his yard.
“My yard is actually one of the few that still has grass,” Winton said. “I’m willing to give it all away. I’m willing to do anything to keep it clean.”
LADWP says in an email that it’s willing to give Winton a financial incentives for the work he’s willing to do. It’s also willing to give him money back when he’s not satisfied with the quality of his yard.
“If you are not satisfied with your LADWP replacement turf, you can return the amount you paid to replace it during your next regular inspection,” LADWP says in the email.
This isn’t the first time LADWP has asked its customers to contribute to fighting climate change.
Some of the top cash rebates LADWP offers its customers are the following:
$25,000 for an acre of lawn with the installation of a new lawnmower (cash up to 90 days).
$20,000 for the entire yard and the installation of a new grassed yard for a single homeowner on a lot of 10 acres.
