Activists from the Ladies in White group have been blocked from leaving their homes ahead of the march marking the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Five’s imprisonment.
The group is currently detained in Talavera, a village in central Cuba, where they were trying to escape the dragnet around protests planned for Sunday.
Meanwhile, state-run Cuban media have reported that as many as 250 people have been arrested in demonstrations across the country for Sunday’s demonstration.
A tweet from prisoners in Talavera describes the situation: “They announced that they were going to block us.” It also includes a photo of a riot police car parked at the entrance of one of the women’s homes.
Nine women had been blockaded from leaving their homes by the government, Cuban Deputy Defense Minister Jose Ramon Machado Ventura wrote on Twitter Saturday.
“The regime’s arbitrary policy will not succeed in its aim of distributing such lies to its small group of hardliners,” he wrote.
