The world’s largest art fair is expanding its footprint to include a new swanky hotel lobby this year, with eight floors of luxury shopping and a flurry of pre-party debauchery that would make the Rolling Stones proud.
More than 600 galleries from all corners of the globe descend on South Beach for a week of art to match sky-high real estate prices. South Beach’s Art Basel will be smaller this year, but made up for with a blast of celeb-guarded fetes that should yield some A-list attendees.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — who are currently on a romantic getaway in Vietnam — were among those attending the opening of the Galerie Daniel Buren in New York on Saturday. Elsewhere, organizers are rumored to be bringing stars for a Rolling Stones concert on the opening night in their white, ritzy hotel, The Biltmore. Also, the Hamptons festival has been holding its own in which Vanity Fair invited Governor Andrew Cuomo as guest of honor.
The wealthy art collectors from around the world were just wrapping up last year’s fair when a New York Post headline said “Bonkers New Art Fair.” The weekend rivaled Cannes, but for those who attended we couldn’t help but feel. Maybe you’re more of a Cannes style, save-the-world type.
